The most important thing when working with horses is a good feel, patience and timing. You need to have patience whether it is a young or an old horse. You need to know when to correct your horse, what cues to use and pay attention to the moment of release of the cues. The horse also needs to trust you to be able to perform at the very high difficulty maneuvers. I believe in a smart and hard working ethic with a strong mental attitude. I also strongly believe to the fact that everything needs to be done with the horse in the current situation.
I believe in that equestrians need to be more aware for our horses health and well-being and less of our own agenda. People have often their ego and eagerness involved with a need of instant gratification when they are with their horses. They want to go fast, to do the maneuvers, to compete and to win. In reality the key is going slower and taking the steps to teach and build a proper biomechanics and muscle memory. Do do things correctly, not quickly. Biomechanical correctness is also the key to longevity and soundness in horses.
When working with the horses we should try to avoid the so called bandaid solutions to problems. Instead we should be looking at holes in the training of the horse, skill level of the rider, physical limitations of the horse and emotional/mental limitations of the horse. By using harsh equipments and forceful methods you are only creating more resistance and missing the underlying problem to beging with what might cause the current situation you are in. Bandaid solutions are often born from wanting the end result without having to go back to the beginning to build the proper foundations.
